Study Program Characteristics

The aim of the study is the preparation for highly qualified research work with deep theoretical and practical knowledge in xenobiochemistry and patobiochemistry and good knowledge in other biochemical sciences and related sciences in the field of pharmacy, biology and medicine. The core of the program is experimental laboratory work, the results of which are published and are included in the dissertation theses. 

The study is focused on biochemical disciplines with an emphasis on the interaction of xenobiotics with the molecules of the organism and on the biochemistry of pathological conditions, including clinical-biochemical aspects.

Information on Graduate Employment

The graduate of doctoral studies in the program of Xenobiochemistry and Patobiochemistry is qualified for research and professional work in laboratories with biochemical focus, for academic career as a university teacher in the field of biochemical disciplines and for highly qualified work in pharmaceutical and bioanalytical companies. He/she is prepared to continuously train and expand his/her knowledge in these disciplines in line with the new knowledge of the field.      

2. Entrance Examination

Framework Content of the Entrance Examination

Oral exam from the knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry focused on diploma thesis or future doctoral studies.

English language exam for English language knowledge assessment (C1 at least).

Conditions of Admission

  1. Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by successful completion of a Master´s study programme.
  2. Successful passed the entrance exam.

Additional Conditions for Bonus Points (e.g. Practice)

  • Successfully completed university studies in pharmacy, medicine, biology or chemistry (rated 2 points).
  • Previous professional experience (rated 3 points).
  • Indication of the supposed training center and the approval of a specific supervisor with the management of the planned doctoral project (rated max. 5 points).

Criteria for the Evaluation Exams

  1. Professional knowledge level - reviewed on answers to questions stated in General content of entrance exam (max. up to 10 points)
  2. Submitted doctoral project – evaluation of project complexity, modern methodological approaches to solution, and the continuity of the project on topics already discussed by the Subject Area Board (max. up to 10 points)

The minimum admission limit is 20 points.

The Dean decides to accept the applicant(s) who have fulfilled the conditions of the admission procedure and, according to the number of points achieved, ranked in the order corresponding to the predetermined number of accepted applicants for the particular program.


3. Framework Study Plan

Study obligations

The study plan is prepared individually according to the focus of the experimental work and also the previous education of the doctoral student. It includes courses and consultations, partial exams (English language exam and at least three other exams in specialized subjects from the following list) in accordance with the focus of the experimental work and previous education of PhD student so that the education in the field is as complete as possible, with an emphasis on depth in the field of experimental dissertation.

Necessary requirement is to pass partial exams in the profile subjects of the discipline, i.e. Xenobiochemistry and Pathobiochemistry (if the student has completed these subjects during master's degree, he/she does not enroll again, he/she will enroll for other subjects instead) and English.

Only after passing the partial exams, PhD student will pass the compulsory State doctoral examination. Fulfillment of the individual study plan is continuously monitored.

Publication activity requirements

At the beginning of his/her studies, the doctoral student will prepare, in cooperation with his/her supervisor, a grant project proposal to Charles University Grant Agency (GA UK). During the studies, the PhD student actively presents obtained results at professional meetings (seminars, PhD conferences, congresses, scientific conferences).

Student co-authorship on 2 publications in IF journals is required, of which at least in one paper is the first author. Alternatively, only one first author publication may be published in a journal with IF above 5 and/or in the first decile.  

Requirements for completing internships

An integral part of the study duties in the doctoral study program is the completion of at least one internship abroad for a total length of at least three months, associated with experimental research work in the field of dissertation.  

Other study obligations

It is possible to participate in the courses of General Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Practical Training in Xenobiochemistry or Pathobiochemistry (practical training or seminars), or in other practical training provided by the department, however, maximum is 6 hours per week, 24 hours per month.

Dissertation themes

State Doctoral Examination

Topics of individual disciplines are usually specified in accordance with the focus of the dissertation. In the course of the State examination, the PhD student will usually receive (at least) 3 topics on which he/she proves his/her professional knowledge. The topics always concern the area of Xenobiochemistry and Pathobiochemistry, further direction depends on the focus of the dissertation.
