Dean’s Bulletin – 4/2025

Dear colleagues, dear students,

At the end of November, the traditional Concert of Students of the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové (LFHK) and the Faculty of Pharmacy (FaF) took place at the Petrof Gallery in Hradec Králové. Although, for administrative reasons, the word charity was omitted from the title of this year’s edition, the entire proceeds of the event once again went to a good cause—helping little Šimon, who suffers from cerebral palsy. I would like to sincerely thank the organizers from the Medical Students Association and the Czech Pharmaceutical Students’ Association, and above all the student musicians who prepared a wonderful program for the audience. The concert culminated in the very first performance of the newly established mixed choir of LFHK and FaF students, “SboreCheck UKHK,” which consists of about 35 students. I am very much looking forward to their next performance!

At the turn of November and December, the results of the evaluation of GAČR grant applications were announced. I am pleased that our faculty was successful again this year and obtained three standard projects (Prof. Petr Pávek, Dr. Lucie Raisová Stuchlíková, and Assoc. Prof. Burkhard Horstkotte) and one international project (Dr. Miloslav Macháček). Given 18 submitted projects, this represents a very good success rate of 22%. I would like to thank and congratulate all successful applicants and wish them interesting and high-quality results during the implementation of their projects.

The construction of our new campus within the Mephared2 project continues at full speed—24 hours a day. In addition to the construction work itself, interior equipment for laboratories and teaching rooms necessary for final approval is being installed, and more than 600 workers rotate on the construction site every day. On Tuesday, November 25, tours of individual departments were organized for a limited number of FaF employees, allowing them to gain an idea of the current state of construction and, above all, of the future layout of their departments and workplaces in the new campus. A few days later, the faculties selected a relocation manager, who immediately began work; in addition to cooperating with the faculties on relocation preparations, he started collecting documentation for a public tender to select a moving company.

Although construction of our campus has been underway for nearly 2.5 years and is literally approaching its completion by leaps and bounds (the deadline for final approval is June 30, 2026), its financing has still not been fully resolved. This situation, in addition to general uncertainty, is causing an increasing number of practical complications in construction management and the administration of all related processes. The reason is the still unresolved issue of the construction and related financing of the second campus of Charles University—the Biocentre Albertov (BCA), the realization of which has already been delayed by approximately two years. In mid-September, this situation resulted in the initiation of proceedings to withdraw the subsidy by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MSMT), which are still ongoing. Unfortunately, this would also affect our campus, as together with the BCA it forms one large Charles University investment within the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). At present, our campus, through its square meters of approved space, guarantees all RRF funds for both Charles University campuses under construction. The situation is truly serious, but still solvable, and I believe that the current and new management of Charles University will devote every effort to remedy this unfavorable situation as soon as possible in cooperation with the MSMT. All the more, I would like to thank the Mephared2 team, the emerging Operations and Technical Department team, the construction supervision team, the construction companies, and everyone involved in the realization of the project for their dedication and effort, which will certainly lead to a successful completion.

In conclusion, I would like to thank all employees for their work for our faculty and its further development, undergraduate students for their active approach to their studies, and doctoral students for their diligent scientific work. Thanks to them as well, our faculty—specifically the research area “Pharmaceutical Sciences,” which we develop at the faculty—was awarded the second-highest grade, A-, in the five-year international evaluation of scientific activity at Charles University!
