Dean’s Bulletin – 4/2024

30/09/2024

Dear colleagues, dear students,

Jaroslav Roh

With the new academic year, I would like to welcome our new colleagues, students of the 1st year of the Master study program Pharmacy, Bachelor study program Laboratory Diagnostics in Healthcare (LDZ) and the follow-up Master study programs Bioanalytical Laboratory Diagnostics in Healthcare (BLDZ) and Pharmaceutical Sciences (PS). While the colleagues from BLDZ and PS have already successfully completed at least one university degree, for most of the Pharmacy and LDZ students this is their first university study and therefore the entry into a completely new phase of their lives. I believe and hope that they will manage the transition to university studies as well as possible and cope with the different and often much more demanding requirements that studying at our faculty will place on them. However, I repeat one thing always and everywhere, and I will not make an exception now: all of you who have started your studies at our faculty can complete them successfully in next few years. It is up to you, your diligence, determination and willingness to devote yourself to your studies. Nothing would make us, the academic staff of the faculty, happier than if all of you successfully fulfilled all your study obligations and successfully graduated from our faculty in the same numbers as you started. I hope you enjoy your time at our faculty, and I keep my fingers crossed for you all to be successful.

Of course, I also welcome our new students in our doctoral programs to the faculty. I hope you enjoy your scientific activities in your chosen fields and achieve interesting and high-quality scientific results together with your supervisors and colleagues in your research groups. This was achieved, for example, by our graduate of the PhD study program Bioanalytical Methods RNDr. Aneta Kholová, Ph.D., who a few days ago received the prestigious international Dimitris N. Chorafas Prize, awarded in cooperation with the Israeli Weizmann Institute of Science to the best graduating PhD students in the Czech Republic. I congratulate her for the excellent representation of our faculty, and I am proud that she is the fourth winner of this award from the Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové out of the historical ten awarded graduates of Charles University.

During the summer months, we also had several successes in project and grant activities. First of all, I would like to mention the OP JAK project of the Intersectoral Cooperation call entitled "Advanced Techniques for Biomedical Diagnostics (ATEBIO)", which we acquired through cooperation with the Institute of Analytical Chemistry of the CAS, the University Hospital Hradec Králové, and the companies WATREX Praha, s.r.o., and Elphogene, s.r.o. The project, which was ranked 3-5th out of 82 project applications and was also the highest ranked in its research field, will bring over 34 million CZK to the Faculty over the next 4 years. I would like to congratulate and thank my colleagues from the Department of Analytical Chemistry and the Grants & Development Office for preparing such a successful project application. Furthermore, I would like to congratulate Alejandro Carazo, PharmD, Ph.D. on winning the prestigious PRIMUS University project entitled "Calcium kinetics modulation as a therapeutic approach in the treatment and prevention of enhanced platelet activation".

I must also mention the construction of our new campus, which continued as planned during the summer. Already at the end of October the construction should reach its highest point, which will also mean the completion of the rough construction. At the moment, the tendering process for the interior fit-out of the various parts of the campus is in full swing.

This year our faculty celebrates its 55th anniversary, so on Friday 25 October we have arranged an afternoon professional program at the faculty dedicated to the education of pharmacists, followed by a social evening in the Petrof Gallery. The keynote speaker will be our alumna, currently the Dean of Pacific University School of Pharmacy (Oregon, USA), Prof. Markéta Marvanová, who will also join the panel discussion with the deans of all three Czech and Slovak pharmaceutical faculties.

In conclusion, I would like to thank all the organizers and faculty departments involved in this year's Night of Scientists, which attracted over 1000 both small and large visitors to our faculty on Friday 27 September. It was clear from their enthusiastic responses that the event left a very positive "Pharmacy footprint" on all of them.

I wish you every success in the academic year 2024/2025.

Assoc. Prof. PharmDr. Jaroslav Roh, Ph.D.
Dean of the faculty
