Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: mechanism of protective effect of prenylflavonoids

The liver plays a major role in the regulation of whole-body energy metabolism and the detoxification of various xenobiotics, including drugs. Therefore, liver diseases can give rise to systemic metabolic abnormalities; conversely, diverse metabolic disorders impacting liver may lead to the
development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Prenylflavonoids have been described to exert hepatoprotective activities by various cellular and molecular mechanisms. The aim of this project is to study mechanisms of hepatoprotective effect of selected natural and semi-synthetic prenylflavonoids in human liver and in mouse model of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In additon, their metabolism and antioxidant effects will be studied.
